Snooker Room
Our snooker room was established in 1988 and became fondly known as the "Bunker". Initially we had one snooker table, and, one pool table situated in the
adjacent room.
We held many snooker competitions here including the Joseph Cunningham Cup, the Liam Boyle Trophy, the Roddy McCorley Competition and the Tennent's sponsored competitions.
The bar area in the "Bunker" had a little old world charm about it, in that, it had been converted from an old coal bunker in the house, hence the name, the "Bunker".
This had always proved to be a popular room, used by many people, and especially in the summer months when large numbers of people used to sit around the band stand and the conversation areas.
It was felt, after a few years, that while the "Bunker" had served its purpose in providing
great entertainment for our members, that we would have to seriously consider building a much larger room to provide further amenities for our members.
To this end we employed an architect, and, in due course we put the work out to tender. The contract was finally awarded to John Hilland Contractors.
On the 25th October 1992 we opened the new complex complete with two snooker tables, a pool table, and, TV facilities to pick up Sky Sports channels.
Following a tragic accident outside our clubroom grounds on a Saturday night in February '92 which claimed the life of one of our popular founder membesr, we unanimously agreed to
name the room in memory of Pat Monaghan. This took place at a dedication ceremony on 9th November '92 attended by Pat's family, friends, members, and indeed, everyone connected with the building of the new complex, now fondly known as the "Pat Monaghan Room".
The first competition in the new room was sponsored by John Hilland.
The second was the Joseph Cunningham Cup sponsored by Paul Kelly, and this was followed by the Liam Boyle Trophy, sponsored by Paddy Boyle and his family. It is perhaps worth noting that Liam Boyle had actually worked on the building here at Moyard House after we bought it from the McAlinden family.
All the competitions held each year are very well supported and are organised to raise much needed finance for Green Cross.
From the "Bunker" to the Pat Monaghan Room at the present day all these competitions have gone from strength to strength thanks mainly to the extreme hard work and dedication of our snooker committee, well done and keep up the good work lads.
Following some friendly visits to our new snooker area by other snooker teams we have been advised that the new facility we now have is among the top three in the league, so we can only look forward to much better things for the future.
